Supporting Our Teaching Profession & Lifting the Existing Excellence of Educators
Neurodivergence, Xenophobia, Sizism, Racism, Philanthropy, Human Migration, Fat Phobia, Translanguaging, Perceptions of Schools, Grief, Navigating the Unexpected, Rest - these are a few of the topics which we have built collections of picture books around. We lead both professional and student facing learning, grounded in picture books, on these and other topics. Custom collections can be created. Topics can be fine-tuned.
Teaching and learning about Social & Emotional Literacies, often called Social Emotional Learning (SEL) does not require a curriculum. It requires attuning to, and developing a deep understanding of ourselves, and others. Many times, teaching "SEL" is seen as an add-on. It isn't. Social & Emotional Literacies are taught and learned throughout all that we do. Learn more about sustaining social and emotional literacies at the individual, small group and organizational level.
Learning, teaching and talking about hard histories, and current political and social truths requires practice. There are many histories and topics we do not have practice discussing. We must develop our ability to talk about, teach and learn about these topics in order to build belonging and felt safety in our communities and our world. We use a "no shame - no blame" approach providing you with a model empowering you to deepen your capacity to facilitate and structure necessary conversations while teaching talking and learning about hard & necessary truths using picture books as our guide.
As educators, schools - communities and legislatures - piece together the puzzle of how best to teach reading, knots are forming in our understanding of how to put current research into practice. One thing research is clear on is that students are reading less, and that a contributing factor is the enthusiasm with which many greeted practices built upon what has been coined as "The Science of Reading." Many of the understandings that ground these practices have been understood for a long time, tugging too tightly on them, however, and losing the flexibility that reading instruction requires threatens to further stifle the delight of learning how to read books, ourselves and our world. We consult with schools to rediscover and sustain joyful communities of readers.
Organizational Consulting
We gather perspectives, facilitate and lead equity centered content, practice & procedural reviews, facilitating data analysis and offering observations & feedback with the goal of dismantling inequities and providing opportunities for locally informed decision-making and action.
